NELSPRUIT : Hungry Lions were crowned Champions of the ABC Motsepe League national playoffs after beating Platinum City Rovers 5 – 4 on penalties.
Both teams qualified for the finals after defeating Mangaung Unite and Glendene United during the week and secured their spots in the Glad Africa Championship for the upcoming 2021 / 22 season.
A grueling week – long playoffs culminated this afternoon, with two sides that have already qualified to play in the Premier Soccer League ( PSL ) going head to head to determine who will take the coveted trophy home.
After playing to a goalless draw in an uneventful encounter, the game had to be settled via penalties and it was the side from Northern Cape that triumphed, slotting home 5 penalties to 4.
The win for Hungry Lions meant that they will walk home with the trophy alongside a cool R1 250 00 000 which will go a long way in helping the club compete in the Glad Africa Championship next season.
The losing side, Platinum City Rovers didn’t walk empty handed as they received R600 000 for their efforts and will also be campaigning in the Glad Africa Championship in the upcoming season.
Lions are expected to use the Tafel Lager Park in Kimberly as their home ground next season while City Rovers are likely to utilize the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace in Rusternburg.
